Accuracy and Distance Competitions

The results of these two competitions will be used to determine the Grand Champion.

TROUT FLY

Accuracy Casting Game. In this event five ring targets are positioned at 25,30,35,40 and 45 feet from a casting box. The caster starts by standing in the casting box with the rod in one hand, the fly in the other, the line on the reel, and attempts to place the fly into the rings. Rods and lines will be provided. Leaders will be identical and equipped with a yarn fly. Any cleaning, lubricating, and stretching the line will be performed by the officials.

Round 1 is called Dry Fly:

The caster has unlimited false casts to each target starting with the nearest and progressing to the farthest. There is only one lay down per target. Line is lengthen while false casting.

Round 2 is called the Wet Fly:

The caster is allowed to bring the fly even with the nearest target, placing the extra line on the grass, then has one pick up and one false cast to each successive target.

The targets will consist of two concentric rings, 30 and 56 inches in diameter.

Scoring will be on a demerit system. Every caster starts with 100 points. A fly that lands on the small ring or within it will receive a score of 0. A fly that lands on the large ring or between it and the smaller ring will receive a score of 1. A fly that lands outside of the large ring will receive a score of 2. The ten scores received from casting the dry fly and wet fly are subtracted from the original 100 points.

This event is timed: Time starts when the fly touches the ground at the beginning of round 1, Dry Fly, and stops when the fly lands on the last cast of round 2, Wet Fly. The shortest time is used as a tie breaker.

DISTANCE CASTING

In this event the caster is attempting to cast the longest distance in three tries. The caster starts with the rod in one hand and sufficient line removed from the reel and placed on the grass. A short warm up period and one trial cast is permitted. The caster then has three attempts to cast their longest distance. Unlimited false casting is allowed and if the caster wants to abort the cast they may do so on the back cast. All three cast will be recorded. All three distances will be recorded. The longest cast will be recorded for competition and the second and third casts will be recorded if needed for a tie breaker.

1.     Several five weight, nine-foot rods from different manufactures will be provided by our sponsors. The rods will be designed to cast long distances, that is, stiff or fast rods. They will be equipped with identical lines: Mastery Series, expert distance, five weight, weight forward floating.

2.     Cleaning, lubricating, and stretching the line will be performed by the officials.

3.     The leader will be a seven-foot hard monofilament material with a yarn fly.

4. The distance cast will have all three casts measured to the nearest inch. The second and third longest casts are used as tie breakers.
